The experiment of Israel was bound to have come to this. In fact the logical and inevitable conclusion to this story is going to be even more tragic. The Zionists’ dream was built on dynamically conflicting concepts, a safe haven for the persecuted Jews and democracy for all inhabitants, Jew and non Jew and the dream of prosperity generated by the cultures working together in harmony.
Two dynamics are playing out which inevitably will end in tragedy. The first is that the original liberal European Zionist movement which guided early Israel has been superseded by culture/religious fundamentalist bigots, mostly immigrants from the near east. The second part of this dynamic condition is that the Israeli Palestinians who are citizens and can vote are closing the population gap faster the Jews can attract other Jews to Israel. This will result in a failure of the Zionists’ democratic experiment and the beginning of an internal reign of terror of unknown magnitude.
The issue for America is how do we react to this, and what should our involvement be? Needless to say, this debate will be subverted by ideologues with an agenda.
